What symptoms or conditions can be treated with Celluvisc?
Celluvisc 1% Eye Drops Solution is a tear substitute that contains carmellose sodium and is used for the treatment of dry eye symptoms such as soreness, burning, irritation, or dryness. It is important to talk to a doctor if the symptoms do not improve or worsen. Celluvisc can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding but may cause short-lasting blurring of vision typically lasting 1-15 minutes. It is recommended to use 1-2 drops in the affected eye as needed. Common side effects may include eye irritation, pain, itchy eyes, and visual disturbance.
What are the common symptoms of dry eyes?
Dry eyes can cause a range of symptoms that usually affect both eyes, such as a stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation in the eyes, sensitivity to light, eye redness, a feeling of having something in the eyes, difficulty wearing contact lenses, and difficulty with nighttime driving. Additionally, dry eyes can lead to the production of stringy mucus in or around the eyes, watery eyes as a response to irritation, and even blurred vision or eye fatigue. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is recommended to consult an eye doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
What are common causes of dry eyes?
Dry eyes can occur when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when your tears evaporate too quickly. Some factors that can increase the likelihood of developing dry eyes include age (especially over 50), wearing contact lenses, extended use of digital devices without breaks, exposure to air conditioning or heating systems, windy or dusty environments, smoking or drinking alcohol, taking certain medications (such as some antidepressants or blood pressure medicines), and underlying conditions like blepharitis, Sjögren's syndrome or lupus.
What is the active ingredient in Celluvisc and how does it work?
The active ingredient in Celluvisc 1% Eye Drops Solution is carmellose sodium, which acts as a tear substitute and lubricant. Carmellose sodium works by moistening and lubricating the eyes to alleviate the symptoms of dry eye, including soreness, burning, irritation, and dryness. It is used for ocular use and is available in single-dose containers. It is important to follow the recommended dose and instructions for use to avoid possible side effects such as eye irritation, pain, redness, and blurring of vision.
How do I use Celluvisc?
Celluvisc is for ocular use and should be used exactly as described in the leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse has told you. Wash your hands before use, tear one single-dose container from the strip, twist off the cap, and gently pull down the lower eyelid. Squeeze one drop into each eye and blink a few times. Do not reuse the single-dose container, and throw it away after use.
What are the possible side effects of Celluvisc?
Common side effects (occurring in between 1 and 10 patients in every 100) are eye irritation (including burning and discomfort), eye pain, itchy eyes, and visual disturbance. Uncommon side effects (occurring in between 1 and 10 patients in every 1000) are allergic reactions (including eye or eyelid swelling), blurring of vision, increase in tear production, sticky eye, crusting of the eyelid and/or drug residue, a feeling that something is in your eye, redness of the eye/eyelid, eyesight worsening, and eye injury to the surface of the eye due to the tip of the vial touching the eye during use. If any side effects get serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
What happens if I apply too much Celluvisc?
The ingredients are not harmful even if you apply too much. It is however recommended to follow the instructions regarding dosage.
Ingredients
Active ingredient: Carmellose sodium 1% w/v.
Other ingredients: Sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, calcium chloride dihydrate, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, and purified water. Small amounts of sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid.
Usage and Instructions
Please read the leaflet provided before using it.
The usual dose is 1-2 drops of Celluvisc in the affected eye, or in each affected eye, 4 times a day, or as often as needed.
Celluvisc 1% w/v carmellose sodium should not be used while wearing contact lenses. Remove contact lenses first before applying the solution, and after applying the solution wait 15 minutes before re-inserting contact lenses.
Always make sure that your single-dose container is undamaged and unopened before use, use the solution immediately after opening, and then discard when done.
To avoid contamination or infection, wash your hands before use, and take care not to let the open end of the single-dose container touch your eye or anything else.
Unless your pharmacist or doctor has recommended differently, simply follow the package instructions as per the below:
- Tear one single-dose container from the strip.
- Hold the single-dose container upright (with the top uppermost) and twist off the top.
- Gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Turn the single-dose container upside down and squeeze it to release one drop into each eye. Blink your eyes a few times.
It is very important to note, that this solution does not store well once the container is opened. In other words, do not re-use the single-dose container, even if there is some solution left. Discard the container and any left-over solution immediately after use.
While used containers can be safely disposed of as household waste, you can do your part to protect the environment by returning unused containers to your pharmacist or chatting to them about how you can dispose of containers responsibly.
