What is the active ingredient in EMLA Cream and how does it work?
EMLA Cream contains two active substances, lidocaine and prilocaine, which belong to the group of medicines known as local anaesthetics. When applied to the skin before medical procedures, EMLA Cream works by numbing the surface of the skin for a short time, helping to prevent pain during the procedure. Although the cream can numb the skin, patients may still feel pressure or touch.
Who can use EMLA Cream?
EMLA Cream can be used by adults, adolescents, and children.
How long can I use Emla cream after opening the pack?
Emla cream is sterile until opened and does not contain any preservatives, which means that it should not be used beyond 28 days of the first opening. It is also important to note that the opened pack should not be used by more than one person.
How long does the numbing effect of EMLA cream last after it's been applied?
After being applied at least an hour before the procedure, the numbing effect of EMLA cream usually lasts for a minimum of 2 hours once it has been removed, though the duration may be shorter if it's being used on the face. It's worth noting that when using EMLA cream on the face, the numbing effect can occur more quickly, taking around 30 to 60 minutes to take effect.
Can EMLA cream be used before getting a tattoo?
Yes, EMLA cream is specifically indicated for use before needle procedures, including tattoos that involve needles being applied to the skin. It is recommended to apply Emla about an hour before the tattoo procedure for optimal effect.
How can EMLA cream help with my fear of needles?
By reducing the pain and discomfort associated with needles, EMLA Cream can help create a more comfortable experience and potentially reduce the fear and anxiety associated with needles.
Ingredients
Lidocaine, prilocaine, macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate, Carbomer 974P, sodium hydroxide and purified water.
Usage and Instructions
First, make sure the area of skin to be anaesthetised is clean and dry. Shave the area before application if necessary.
Squeeze half a 5g tube of cream (about 2g) onto the procedure site, approximately the size of a 50p coin.
Take one of the occlusive dressings and remove the centre cut-out piece. Peel the protective paper away from the underside. Cover the Emla cream with the dressing so that you get a thick layer underneath and press down the edges firmly to avoid leakages. Do not spread out the cream.
Remove the paper frame. Emla must be applied at least one hour before the procedure and can be left in place for up to five hours for adults and four hours for children. The longer the cream stays on, the better the anaesthetic effect!
When ready for use, remove the dressing and wipe off excess cream with a tissue.
Please make sure an appropriate dressing is used to cover the skin to maximise the absorption and leave it on the skin surface for adequate time (usually 60 minutes) ahead of the needle procedure.
You can also ask your pharmacist to advise you on how much to use and where to apply. Please ensure the needle procedure is performed within the following four hours, but preferably as soon as possible after the removal of the excess cream.
