Lactulose Oral Solution 500ml is recommended for pregnant women, children with constipation, people undergoing or who have recently undergone surgery, elderly people with chronic constipation.
Lactulose is effectively a type of sugar composed of two types, fructose and galactose. It's not metabolised nor absorbed by the body and the substance helps pull water into the colon, softening the stool.
Lactulose Solution Teva also works by promoting peristalsis, pushing food through the digestive system which helps to prevent the onset of constipation as well.
Ingredients
Lactulose (67.0% w/v), lactose and galactose.
Usage and Instructions
Adults: Initially take 15-30ml daily for the first 2-3 days (45ml may be given in obstinate cases) then 10-15ml daily or according to the need of the patient.
Children: Initially take 10-25ml daily for the first 2-3 days then 5-15ml daily or according to the need of the patient.
Dosage does not appear to be related to the age or weight of the child and should be adjusted to produce the required response.
Lactulose isn't absorbed into the bloodstream and is not known to be harmful if used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, as with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking lactulose in pregnancy, or if you're breastfeeding.
Warnings
Do not take Lactulose if you are Lactose intolerant.
Do not take if you have a blockage in your gut (intestinal obstruction).
Do not take if you are intolerant to any of the ingredient.
Get medical advice before taking lactulose if you have symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, feeling sick and vomiting, or rectal bleeding where you don't know the cause, as this could indicate that you have a more serious condition that needs investigating.
