What are some common symptoms of dry eye sensation?
Dry eye sensation can cause a range of symptoms including a gritty feeling in the eye, the sensation that there is something in the eye, itching, redness, blurry vision, and light sensitivity. These symptoms may be temporary or persist for longer periods of time, and can occur in one or both eyes. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult with an eye doctor to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment options.
What are common causes of dry eyes?
Dry eyes can be caused by a lack of balance in the tear-flow system or external factors like air conditioning and heating that dry out the tear film. The natural ageing process, menopause, and side effects of certain drugs like antihistamines can also lead to dry eyes. Additionally, diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and collagen vascular diseases that affect tear production, as well as problems with eyelid closure, can contribute to dry eyes.
What is the active ingredient in Celluvisc and how does it work?
The active ingredient in Celluvisc 0.5% Eye Drops Solution is carmellose sodium, which acts as a tear substitute and lubricant. It is used for the treatment of dry eye symptoms such as soreness, burning, irritation or dryness. The solution works by providing moisture and lubrication to the eyes, reducing discomfort and helping to maintain the natural tear composition.
How often can I use carmellose sodium and when will it start to work?
Carmellose sodium can typically be used up to 4 times a day, or as needed. It should start working right away, although it may take a few weeks to experience the full effects. If you wear contact lenses or require more frequent use, a brand without preservatives may be recommended. Fortunately, carmellose sodium is generally safe to use and doesn't have any known long-term side effects.
Can I use carmellose sodium eye drops for a long period of time?
Yes, it is safe to use carmellose sodium eye drops for as long as needed. However, if you have been using them regularly and there has been no improvement in your condition after 4 to 6 weeks, you should consult with a pharmacist or your doctor. They may suggest trying different types of eye drops, an eye gel or ointment. If you still experience dry eyes after trying different treatments, it is recommended to see your doctor for further evaluation.
What determines the duration of carmellose sodium usage for treating dry eyes?
The duration of carmellose sodium usage for treating dry eyes depends on the underlying cause of the dry eyes. If the dry eyes symptoms come and go due to factors such as wearing contact lenses, being in air-conditioned or heated environments, or using computer screens for long periods of time, carmellose sodium can be used only as needed. However, if the dry eyes are caused by conditions such as blepharitis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, or lupus, treatment with carmellose sodium may be long term.
How should I use Celluvisc?
Celluvisc is for ocular use and the recommended dose is 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed. Make sure the single-dose container is intact before use, and the solution should be used immediately after opening. To avoid contamination, do not let the open-end of the single-dose container touch your eye or anything else. Wash your hands before use.
What should I do if I use more Celluvisc than I should?
If you use more Celluvisc than you should, it will not cause any harm. However, if you are worried, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
What are the risks of overusing eye drops?
Overusing eye drops can cause several risks, including washing away natural tears that protect the eyes and rebounding of eye symptoms upon discontinuation or as the effects subside. Additionally, eye drops can mask more serious eye problems by only addressing the symptoms rather than the underlying cause. It's important to use eye drops as directed and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

The usual dose is 1-2 drops of Celluvisc in the affected eye, or in each affected eye, 4 times a day, or as often as needed.
Celluvisc is safe to use even if you’re wearing contact lenses.
Always make sure that your single-dose container is undamaged and unopened before use, use the solution immediately after opening, and then discard when done.
To avoid contamination or infection, wash your hands before use, and take care not to let the open end of the single-dose container touch your eye or anything else.
Unless your pharmacist or doctor has recommended differently, simply follow the package instructions as per the below:
- Tear one single-dose container from the strip.
- Hold the single-dose container upright (with the top uppermost) and twist off the top.
- Gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Turn the single-dose container upside down and squeeze it to release one drop into each eye. Blink your eyes a few times.
It is very important to note, that this solution does not store well once the container is opened. In other words, do not re-use the single-dose container, even if there is some solution left. Discard the container and any left-over solution immediately after use.
While used containers can be safely disposed of as household waste, you can do your part to protect the environment by returning unused containers to your pharmacist or chatting to them about how you can dispose of containers responsibly.
