1. What are symptoms of UTIs?
You may have a UTI if you experience at least 2 of the following symptoms:
- Burning pain when passing urine (Dysuria)
- Passing urine more often than usual at night (New nocturia)
- Urine is cloudy or smells strong
Other secondary symptoms are:
- Urinary frequency
- Urinary urgency
- Suprapubic (lower abdomen) discomfort or tenderness
- Urine that smells strong
2. Can I buy this medication in advance?
Yes, we can sell this medication in advance to you, if – for example – you're going on holiday and you need to do activities that you think will trigger lower UTI symptoms. Although we can give you an advance supply, you can't use this medication to prevent symptoms. It's just for in case you experience the symptoms.
3. Is this an over-the-counter medication? No, this is a prescription-only medication (POM). But we do offer a private clinic (called PGD) where a trained pharmacist can dispense Nitrofurantoin 100mg after carrying out a clinical assessment.
4. What will happen once I have answered the questions in the form? A pharmacist trained to provide this UTI private service will assess the form and call you to discuss with you the answers you provided.
5. Why do I need to provide my phone number? In order to dispense this medication without a prescription, the consultation must be carried out via phone or video call. As well as this being a legal requirement to ensure that the medication is suitable for you, the final phone consultation will allow you to ask the pharmacist any questions you may have.

Ingredients
The product is in a modified release, hard gelatin capsule containing the equivalent of 100mg of Nitrofurantoin in the form of nitrofurantoin macrocrystals and nitrofurantoin monohydrate.
each capsule contains talc, corn starch, lactose carbopol, povidone, sugar, magnesium stearate, gelatin and colouring agents (E104, E171, E132).
Printing ink contains: Shellac, Propylene Glycol (E1520), Titanium Dioxide (E171), Black iron oxide (E172), Ammonium Hydroxide (E527) and Simethicone.
Usage and Instructions
Take ONE 100mg prolonged-release capsule twice daily for three days.
The treatment should not last longer than 3 days.
Warnings
Who cannot take nitrofurantoin?
• If you are under 18 years of age or over 65 years of age.
• If you are a male patient.
• If you have previously experienced urinary tract infection with haematuria (visible or non-visible) where the underlying cause was not investigated by their GP or specialist.
• If upper urinary tract infection and other alternative diagnoses have not been excluded from a past UTI.
• If you have known hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, other nitrofurans or any of the excipients (see section 6.1 of the SPC).
• If you have kidneys or liver problems.
• If you have a G6PD deficiency.
• If you have acute porphyria.
• If you are breast-feeding, pregnant or you think you might be pregnant.
• If you currently take Dapsone or Prilocaine.
• If you have a history of upper urinary tract infection (including pyelitis and pyelonephritis).
• If you have a history of complicated UTI.
• If you have an indwelling urinary catheter.
• If you have been treated for a UTI in the last 3 months.
• If you have an abnormal urinary tract renal calculus, vesicoureteric reflux, reflux nephropathy, neurogenic bladder, urinary obstruction or recent instrumentation.
• If you require it to prevent an urinary-tract infections.
• If you experience flank or loin pain.
• If you have a temperature above 38°C (fever).
• If you are immunosuppressed.
• If you have a rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
• If you have an abnormality of the urinary tract.
• If you have severe chronic recurrence of UTIs.
• If you are still experiencing symptoms following a previous UTI.
• If you have any of the followings:

̵ Electrolyte imbalance
̵ Debilitating conditions
̵ Peripheral neuropathy (including those susceptible to peripheral neuropathy)
̵ Pulmonary disease
̵ Vitamin B deficiency (particularly folate deficiency)
̵ Neurological disorders
̵ Allergic diathesis
Please consult your GP if you haven't noticed any improvement after 3 days of taking the medication.
Side Effects
As for all medications Nitrofurantoin capsules can cause side effects. Some of the most common side effects are:
- Acute, subacute and chronic pulmonary reactions
- Liver toxicity. If you notice any symptoms of hepatitis please stop the medication immediately and call 111.
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Fever over 38 °C
