What symptoms or conditions can be treated with Blistex Cold Sore Cream?
Blistex Cold Sore Cream is tailored for addressing the early stages of recurrent cold sores on the lips.
How does Blistex Cold Sore Cream work?
The cream's effectiveness is due to Docosanol, an antiviral substance that counteracts the cold sore-causing virus. It permeates the skin to prevent the virus from invading healthy cells, thus keeping cold sores in check.
What does the research say about Blistex Cold Sore Cream?
Studies indicate that Docosanol, the primary active component in Blistex Cold Sore Cream, effectively treats cold sores by impeding the herpes simplex virus from entering and replicating in healthy skin cells.
Can Blistex Cold Sore Cream be used by children?
Blistex Cold Sore Cream is recommended for adults and adolescents over 12 years old. It is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.
Ingredients
Each gram of cream contains 100 mg of docosanol.
Other ingredients: Sucrose stearates (mono and distearate), Light mineral oil, Propylene glycol, Benzyl alcohol, Purified water.
Usage and Instructions
Adults and children from 12 years and over:
Carefully cover the entire cold sore with a thin layer of medication five times daily, about every three hours while awake.
It is crucial to start treatment immediately after noticing the initial symptoms of a cold sore (such as pain, burning, itching, tingling, or redness), as the effectiveness of the treatment has not been proven if it begins at the blister or ulcer stage.
Continue the treatment until the cold sore is fully healed, which typically takes 4 to 6 days, but not longer than 10 days.
Always read the label.
Warnings
Stay clear of applying the cream near or in the eyes.
This cream contains propylene glycol, which can lead to skin irritation.
Patients with weakened immune systems should not use this cream.
Do not start using the cream when a blister or ulcer has already developed, as its effectiveness at this stage has not been proven.
Regarding children, there is no experience with the use of this cream in those under 12 years old and only limited experience with adolescents (aged 12-18 years). Therefore, it is advised not to use the cream in children below 12 years of age.
